Market commentary:
Cattle sold with strong demand at Superior’s Week in the Rockies from Snowbird, Utah July 8th - 12th. Compared to 2023, yearling steers and heifers out of the northern states sold steady to cases of $20 higher, with a bulk of the yearling offering bringing $8-12/cwt higher. It should be noted that the Live Cattle Futures is trading at relatively the same level as the same week one year ago, but cash cattle are higher, continuing the story of optimism and tighter supplies. Calves for fall delivery also sold with strong demand. The calf market was fully steady compared to the Corn Belt Classic, although most cattle in this offering were lighter than the central Montana calves offered at South Sioux City. Central and eastern Montana unweaned calves, compared to 2023 summer market: 4-wts $25-50/cwt higher. 5-wts $15-40 higher. 6-wts $12-30 higher. Delivery date, shipping terms and address all playing factors into the sale price and bidder participation. As we saw in the Corn Belt Classic in June, contracts with bigger slides and weight stops generated excellent bidder participation. Heifer calf interest was excellent with notably lighter volume in the offering compared to previous years’ sales. Most heifers were $15-35 back of their steer mates. Program cattle garnered excellent interest throughout the week with several large feedyards participating exclusively on these lots. Calves without preconditioning shots sold at a noticeable discount compared to calves with shots.
Again, I will emphasize that this commentary is based on the cattle selling out of the immediate market area. Deadline for Superior’s Big Horn Classic (August 19-23) is August 2nd! Reach out to Joel Sewell (406-788-9396) or Kyle Shobe (406-366-0472) for more information.
