Hello Central Montana and beyond! Wow…what a day. Jodie and I want to express our appreciation for all the support and encouragement we’ve received in recent weeks with this transition of ownership from Lyle and Jan Allen to us. Our first sale was Tuesday, and we ended up with just over 1,350 head of cattle and a few horses coming to town. One of the highlights was the American Fork Ranch calves. They had a nice cut of 103 weaned heifer calves weigh 451 and bring $180.00/cwt! That was our first true test of the calf run this fall, and I’d say there’s sure some optimism around the country! A sale like that is certainly a testament to the value of COMPETITIVE MARKETS in our industry, and an example of what true price discovery is all about! We saw a good run of yearling cattle this week too and that market has maybe improved a tick over the last sale here two weeks ago. The cow and bull trade is starting to show a little of that fall pressure already, although the big, solid, smoother-made cows would still bring north of $60/cwt! The leaner cows, even the better lean cows would stop pretty hard in the low to mid $50’s this week. Open heiferettes were stronger at $66-$89 depending on flesh and kind. Of course we’ll sell all classes of cattle on Tuesdays from now through the fall with the Feeder Specials every week beginning at 1:00 p.m. Mark your calendar for our annual Heart of the Herd Bred Cow Sale on November 17th.
